News Electrical problems can’t hold Elton Back
13th July 2008
UKT Racing where back in the action at the Nurburgring in Germany. Stalling problems during the press day led to an engine strip down and rebuild over the Thursday afternoon and evening.
No problem was found and it was decided we should go out for practice and qualifying on the Friday. Both outings failed to show the same problem and Elton took the truck steady managing to qualify in 3rd place. No problem for Elton as he soured past both Cees Zandbergen and Garry George into first place within the first quarter of the race.
A restart caused by Dave Jenkins spinning in the first corner put the grid back to its start position for a second run. Once again, no problem for the Class B Championship contender bringing out a repeat performance. This time, disaster strikes! The stalling problem was back causing another restart. This time without Elton Boocock.
No points for round 6 and a chance for Cees to widen the championship lead from the 1 point after round 5.
Further investigation concluded and electrical problem was shutting off the fuel pump. With this fixed, Elton had to start from the back of the grid. There would be no prizes for guessing that this was set to be an eventful race. Powering through many of the trucks into and through the notorious Nurburgring complex, Elton again heading straight for the front.
This time Gareth Davis was to prove a big enough obstacle to prevent Elton from achieving a podium finish, but put them both in the closest action of the entire race. Gareth’s regular style of using both sides of the track was holding Elton back and the pair had various collisions as Gareth fought hard to keep Elton behind.
Eventually Elton went up the side of Gareth heading at 160kmh to the Chicane. Gareth leant on Elton all the way and the cabs spent more time together than apart as Elton skilfully held the steering, two wheels on the grass at full speed in front of a crowd now on its feet. Finally as Elton was going into the chicane and Gareth was pushing him sideways into the tyre bails, Elton pulled off a fantastic piece of driving, missing the bails by inches and taking the lead. From then, the race was on to catch 4th place Ben Horne. The race simply didn’t last long enough and the team had to settle for 5th place. This leaves UKT Racing still comfortably in 2nd place despite the no points for round 6.
With 14 points now separating the front runners, Elton has his work cut out to catch Cees Zandbergen if he is to become 2008 British Champion.
