Disaster strikes at Donnington day

27th July 2008
It was a day of firsts for Elton.

First in qualifying,
First to be spun on the
First corner and
First to give piggy back.

The day started with qualifying and Elton on pole. Due to some of the field having incorrect timings it was agreed that the grid should form based on championship standing. This put the team back into 2nd. Still on the front row and with fastest lap by 4 seconds left no real problem.

With faster trucks coming aggressively from the back, the infamous red gate corner led to the predictable demolishing derby. After the red flags where put out, the trucks re-gridded for another attempt. This time 3 abreast, Boocock, Zandbergen and George entered the right hand bend. With nowhere to go, Zandbergen spun Boocock 180 degrees then back 90 degrees as he struggled to stay out of the gravel pit. No such luck for Elton as he failed to get the truck out of the gravel and stayed parked next to Steven Powell resulting in another red flag and the race abandoned.

The team worked hard to get the truck back out for the 2nd race which had now been declared as point scoring for the 1st race. Elton on the front row made no delay this time in leaving red gate ahead and steamed down the craner curves out in front. Dave Jenkins, the class A MAN driver, driving his class B Sisu made his way though to the front and eventually out powered Elton on the back straight. Neatly in second Elton was desperate to find a vantage point on the bends but simply ran out of legs on the straights. Within a further few laps, Zandbergen and George where hot on his heels.

Garry George made an outside move on Elton at red gate bringing the trucks head to head and ultimately Boocock came out the winner in the metal to metal action. As Garry ran off the track and back on, he clipped the 81 truck of Elton Boocock smashing the rear tyre and effectively removing Elton from the race. The race did continue once again down the craner curves as Elton battled to keep ahead with his truck literally disintegrating. Garry again tried an outside move on the old Hairpin, failing and going wide. As he came back on the track he failed to control the vehicle, seemingly unable to see that Elton was staying to one side and left the ground as he drove over the back of the Seddon Atkinson.

Both trucks span off the track, into the gravel and race over. The damage sustained was so great that the truck was unable to race in the second point scoring race of the day. One disastrous day has put Elton back into third and 5 points behind Gareth Davis the fellow Seddon Atkinson driver who manages to steal 2nd place (for the time being!)

The truck has been stripped and will be rebuilt for the next round within just 4 days.
