Work First, Play Later!

4th November 2008
The final rounds of the Delphi British Truck Racing Championship went perfectly for Elton Boocock as he stuck to the plan and secured the position of Championship runner up. The racing was not without excitement as Boocock spun 540 degrees infront of a full grid after the 4th corner (Graham Hill Bend). In a show of fantastic driving, the remainder of the pack avoided the silver Seddon Atkinson, parting left and right as the truck was stranded in the middle of the track. Once all the trucks were through, Elton raced through the terential rain to regain some of the positions and bring the gap between himself and the third placed Garry George down to 4 trucks. This was all that was required to set up a perfect final 2008 championship race.

The team knew that they had to come within 6 places of George and that would be a comfortable race. From the outset, Elton was under orders to stay out of trouble and bring home the points. Boocock sat back and watched the action between Horne and Powell, keeping it clean and bringing home the 2008 Runner Up title.

The day ended with an A class race with B class trucks on the back (no points awarded). From the back of the grid, Elton roared through the B class trucks passing 2008 third place George within the first lap. Elton’s season long sparring partner Cees Zandbergen proved more difficult to beat, but with an explosive coming together between Zanbergen and A class truck Brookfield, Elton came through untouched and went on to complete the race as first B class driver and took fastest lap. Having carried out the plan to the letter, the last race was a real reward for a driver that has shown complete comittment throughout the season, backed by a team that despite some major mid season rebuild work have worked consistently to keep the show on the road.

After the final race, Elton said “That was just the icing on the cake. The smile [quite big at the time!] is not just for the race you have just seen, it is for the whole season. We have had to fight all year, and thanks to the sponsors, the team, my family and even a little help from the rainbow warriors [after the Donington incident], I get to drive like that! The team and I are all ‘living the dream’ and we are aware of the support that goes into enabling us do that. We are really excited about next year. We will be as busy between now and the start of next years season as we have been all year. We are really looking forward to this time next year, joining Cees after he has collected his 2009 Runner Up trophy!”
