A weekend of disasters leaves Elton with a third

21st April 2009
During qualifying, the smoke rules were not upheld leaving Elton in fourth despite being the fastest truck that did not receive a warning over smoke! The first race started with the traditional coming together at hatchets leaving Elton with a tyre out along the back. 7 lasp in and Elton was hot on the pursuit of second position only to be stopped by a red flag incident elsewhere on the track. On the re grid for a 3 lap restart, an official notice the tyre out and insisted on removing the Seddon Atkinson from the track. Determined to the end, Elton insisted that the truck would be able to complete the final three laps with the missing tyre. Then the decision was made to let the truck out from the pit lane, effectively giving Elton no chance of making an impact on round 3, which of course settles the grid for round 4.

Engine problems in the race left Elton in his own race that evening from Pembrey to Heathrow and back again to collect a vital part for the repair. This paid off in the first race of the Sunday morning.

Round 4 began much the same and Elton lost positions in the chaos. Within the first lap, the team had made quick progress in cutting up the field and Elton came flying past three other trucks in one move down the start straight between the pit lane wall and the offending competitors. The daring move left Elton once again hunting for 2nd position again. this time with a greater distance to make up, he sgradually made up the gap until engine problems stalled the attack leaving a fast paced Steve Powell to collect another second and Elton settling for third place.

Unable to fix the second engine problem in time, UKT sat out the final race of the weekend and only managed 10 points from the weekend. Now the team face some serious engine work and a steep climb up the table if they are to finish in the top three. The saving grace is that Elton seems to work better when the challenge is tougher. At the end of the weekend, Elton was in positive spirits despite the many issues that the weekend had delivered. The next race rounds are in Germany at the Nurburgring where Elton achieved his first ever podium finish.
